Only by Pride…

“Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.”

We see, in this verse, that the root of all contention, arguments, disagreements, conflicts, controversies, strife, etc. is PRIDE. If we take the time to think, why do we argue? We will soon come to the conclusion that so often it is because we are right, and until everyone else recognizes this… we will continue to quarrel. That is pride. None of us like to acknowledge that we could ever be wrong. To admit, “I was wrong”, requires the painful process of swallowing our pride. But, I must tell you it is not at all as painful as what pride can and will do to you. Proverbs 16:18  “Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.”  If we find that we are often in the center of arguments, disagreements, strife, etc., we must accept the fact that we have a problem with pride and then, with God’s help, go on to fix it. The next time we are about to start an argument or get involved in one, let’s first consider this: Proverbs 29:23, “A man’s pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.”
