It Is Enough
“God often takes a course for accomplishing His purposes directly contrary to what our narrow views would prescribe. He brings a death upon our feelings, wishes, and prospects when He is about to give us the desire of our hearts.” ~ John Newton
The above quote came to my mind while thinking about the following verses this morning…
“And they went up out of Egypt, and came into the land of Canaan unto Jacob their father, And told him, saying, Joseph is yet alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob’s heart fainted, for he believed them not. And they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said unto them: and when he saw the wagons which Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of Jacob their father revived: And Israel said, It is enough; Joseph my son is yet alive: I will go and see him before I die.” Genesis 45:25-28
Long ago, Jacob had experienced a “death” to all hopes of ever seeing his son again…much less witness Joseph’s boyhood dreams being fulfilled. The evidence of this death is Jacob’s response of “it is enough”. No doubt, there was a time when Jacob had great plans for the son of his old age. Now, just seeing Joseph one more time before he died was enough for this father.
Today, is it possible that there are some dreams that we just need to let die? Do we need to come to the place where we, like Jacob, can say, “it is enough”? Right now, does our prayer need to be, “Lord, forget all of my desires. What YOU want is enough for me.”
