I’ll Wish I Had Given Him More

“Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.” Ecclesiastes 9:10

In my Bible, I have written beside the above verse – “If you are going to do something for God, do it NOW and do it HEARTILY!”  A portion of Spurgeon’s comments on this verse are:

“Let us not wait for large opportunities, or for a different kind of work, but do just the things we “find to do” day by day. We have no other time in which to live. The past is gone; the future has not arrived; we never shall have any time but time present. Then do not wait until your experience has ripened into maturity before you attempt to serve God. Endeavour now to bring forth fruit. Serve God now, but be careful as to the way in which you perform what you find to do–“do it with thy might.” Do it promptly; do not fritter away your life in thinking of what you intend to do to-morrow as if that could recompense for the idleness of to-day. No man ever served God by doing things to-morrow. If we honour Christ and are blessed, it is by the things which we do to-day. Whatever you do for Christ throw your whole soul into it. Do not give Christ a little slurred labour, done as a matter of course now and then; but when you do serve Him, do it with heart, and soul, and strength.” (taken from Spurgeon’s Morning & Evening)

As the verse says, there will come a day when we will no longer have the opportunity to serve the Lord. And, since none of us know when that day will be, the time to serve Him is today! I have never heard a testimony of a dying saint who wished they had not spent so much of their life serving God. But, I have heard of many who regretted not giving Him more…

 I’ll Wish I Had Given Him More

By and by when I look on His face,
Beautiful face, thorn-shadowed face;
By and by when I look on His face,
I’ll wish I had given Him more
More, so much more —
More of my love than I e’er gave before.
By and by when I look on His face,
I’ll wish I had given Him more.

By and by when He holds out His hands,
Welcoming hands, nail riven hands;
By and by when He holds out His hands,
I’ll wish I had given Him more.
More, so much more,
More of my love than I e’er gave before,
By and by when He holds out His hands,
I’ll wish I had given Him more.

In the light of that heavenly place,
Light from His face, beautiful face;
In the light of that heavenly place,
I’ll wish I had given Him more.
More, so much more,
Treasures unbounded for Him I adore,
By and by when I look on His face,
I’ll wish I had given Him more.

    I awakened at 3:45 AM and noticed my electronic piano was on, so I sat down to play with my earphones on, as I often do, and the first thing that came to my mind was this song. The only time I’ve heard it song was by my very dear friend when I was in Bible school at Prairie Bible Institute. (1956-1960). I had never seen the music or the words, but I remembered the first verse, and I sat down to the piano and played it. Then I thought, I wonder if this song can be found on the Internet? So I typed in the words, “I’ll wish I had given him more”, and this is what I found. What a blessing to have these words! I have written them down in my journal, and I can hardly wait to call my friend to let her know that I found this song. I am sure she will remember singing it, thank you so much for putting this on the Internet!
