Serving
“For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption” Acts 13:36
A portion of Matthew Henry’s comments on this are as follows:
“David was a great blessing to the age wherein he lived; he was the servant of his generation: many are the curse, and plague, and burden of their generation. Even those that are in a lower and narrower sphere must look upon it that they live to serve their generation; and those that will do good in the world must make themselves servants of all, (1Co 9:19). We were not born for ourselves, but are members of communities, to which we must study to be serviceable.” ~ Matthew Henry
In my Bible, I have written beside the above verse – “Am I spending my life serving my generation by the will of God?”
I believe a heart that desires to serve will find opportunities to do so. They will not wait for “bigger doors” to open while brushing aside the seemingly “small” tasks. I have heard it said, “bloom where you are planted” and those with a servant’s heart will do just that as they seek to serve in whatever capacity they are able. I like the following quote:
“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And that which I can do, by the grace of God, I will do.” ~ D.L. Moody
The age in which we are living is our generation. In what ways would God have us serve today?
