Will Our Children Remember Parents Who Stood?
“As God looks down from heaven at what’s happening in America, I want to be found standing on the front lines for righteousness’ sake.” ~ Pastor Poindexter
The above quote is a reflection of what has been heavy on my heart in recent months.
This past week, a childhood memory came back to me. The memory was of a newspaper article accompanied by a picture of a little blonde-headed girl sitting on the outside steps of a building in downtown Charleston, WV. The article was about some sort of rally. The little blonde-headed girl was me. I was at the rally that day with my parents and older siblings. I don’t remember much at all about that rally…but I do know my parents were taking a stand.
A similar childhood memory of mine – taking bus trips to Washington DC with a big church group. As a little girl, I can’t really say that I understood the purpose of those rallies we attended – I just enjoyed getting to ride on a big bus, stay in a motel and eat at restaurants. Although I did not understand the “whys”…I did know that my parents believed firmly in something. I did know my parents were taking a stand.
This past fall we, along with many from our church, had the opportunity to attend the “We Stand With God” rally in NC.
As an adult, I am very thankful for the opportunity to let our voices be heard. I can’t say that all the children fully understood why we were there that day.
I can’t say what their childhood memories of that day will include…
But, although they may not have fully understood as we adults…
I do believe that they will remember that we were there to take a stand that day. I believe even the youngest that can remember will at some point understand that daddies and mommas and grandparents, etc were standing…
…and that’s what I want my children to remember.
Just this week, we had the opportunity to stand. In the pouring rain, we made the trek to Charlotte to once again let our voices be heard.
And, although the outcome of Monday evening’s vote was not what we had prayed as well as stood for, I do not regret at all standing outside in the wind and rain the other evening. I do not regret taking our children to stand with us…
Yes, one day they will look back and remember things that may not seem as important – the fun bus rides, eating at restaurants…
But I believe with all my heart that, included in those memories will also be memories of parents who stood…
And that’s what I want my children to remember – parents who stood for truth and righteousness. Whatever the future holds for our country, by God’s grace I want to at least be able to look at my children…my grandchildren in the eyes and tell them, “I tried my best to stand with God”.
“Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” Ephesians 6:13
