I Get It From My Mom…
We spent this past weekend up in WV to take care of some things as well as celebrate my mom’s 93rd birthday. Friday morning, I took Mom out for her weekly errands. As we walked out of K Mart, I couldn’t help but get tickled at our conversation that went something like this:
MOM – “Oh, look at the sky…it’s just beautiful!”
ME – “Uh-huh”
MOM – “Now, what song does that remind you of?”
ME – (drawing a complete blank) “Ummmmm….”
The only song that came to my mind right off was “Beyond the Sunset” but since it was morning, I doubted that was the song she had in mind.
MOM – “America the Beautiful!”
ME – (continued blank look)
MOM – “Oh beautiful for spacious skies…”
ME – “Ohhhhhhhhh….” (light now coming on)
At this point, I’m chuckling inside. I immediately thought of the different times I have shared songs on this blog that have come to my mind due to this or that. Right there in the K Mart parking lot, it dawned on me – I get that from my mom! 🙂
You know…as moms, our children are going to naturally pick up some of our character traits. They will have a strong tendency to pick up some of our habits – good and bad. And, just as I did not realize until this past weekend that little trait I had picked up from my mom, our children will pick up little sayings, mannerisms, facial expressions, attitudes, etc from us – whether we want them to or not.
I have talked to my girls about this. I have told them that, as they get older, there will be characteristics about them that are reflective of their parents…and even grandparents. These conversations have a somber tone because, unfortunately, I know these characteristics will be both positive and negative. As I continue to strive to grow in the Lord, I’ve encouraged my girls to embrace any personality traits they may “inherit”…any habits that would be pleasing to God…while asking the Lord to help them overcome any qualities that are not Christ-like. I am thankful that, if their heart’s desire is to be Godly young ladies, HE will help them to be overcomers!
“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.” I John 4:4
