Yesterday’s Battles
“David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.” I Samuel 17:37
The above verse is part of young David’s response to King Saul who was questioning David’s ability to slay Goliath. In this verse, we see David speaking to the king with CONFIDENCE that God would indeed deliver him!
“…he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine…”
How could David speak with such boldness…such assurance in the Lord’s deliverance? This young shepherd boy was looking back and remembering other battles in his life where God had wrought deliverance. It is from these past victories that David is receiving strength for his present battle.
Oh my…how I thank the Lord this morning for past victories! Now, at the time…when those victories were battles…I can’t really say that I was thankful for them. Just as it is doubtful that David was praising God for the lion who was about to make a meal out of him, I must admit that in the midst of past trials, there have been times when the battle was raging pretty fierce…and thanking God was not the first thing on my mind.
But NOW, I look back to those battles that turned into victories and I THANK GOD for them! It is yesterday’s battles that give me strength for today! It is yesterday’s battles that give me CONFIDENCE in MY GOD Who WILL DELIVER once again! AMEN!
Reading the above verse this morning brought to my mind a song that we have on a cd. This morning, are you in the midst of a battle? Look back to past trials in your life where the Lord wrought deliverance and receive STRENGTH and CONFIDENCE for today! He’s the same God that saw you through way back then. You can trust Him to deliver you once again.
Yesterday’s Battles
I’ve lived through days
Filled with heartache and pain
And prayed to the Father
To take them away
Then I heard Him whisper,
“I’m always with you
I hold tomorrow,
I’ll bring you through”
Yesterday’s trials
Give me strength for today
And they serve to remind me
That He’ll make a way
The nighttime is over,
And now I can see
That yesterday’s battles
Are today’s victories.
If you are weary
From the burdens you bear
So tired of struggling
And getting nowhere
Give them to Jesus.
He’ll stand in your place
When it is over,
You’ll once again say
Yesterday’s trials
Give me strength for today
And they serve to remind me
That He’ll make a way
The nighttime is over,
And now I can see
That yesterday’s battles
Are today’s victories.

“And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High. I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old. I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.” Psalm 77:10-12
