How Firm A Foundation

So far this morning, I’ve heard the following song twice. What rich, comforting words are contained in this old hymn! I just had to look up the lyrics and read over them carefully. As I did, my heart was blessed and reminded of the Lord’s unfailing love and presence in my life! Ahh…how FIRM a foundation we have when we build our lives on His precious, EXCELLENT Word! What more can God say to us that He has not already said in Scripture? No matter where we are or what conditions we may face, His GRACE is all-sufficient!!  “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” II Corinthians 12:9

My friend, if you are saved (and I pray that there has been a time in your life when you were convicted of your sin and trusted Christ alone to save you) are you building your life on God’s Word? Have you spent time reading and heeding it today? Today, have you been comforted through the pages of your Bible? Today, have you been challenged in your walk with the Lord? Today, have you been instructed in a particular situation you are facing? A Christian cannot neglect the Word of God and expect to survive. God’s Word is our spiritual food and therefore our source of instruction, protection, comfort, encouragement, etc. Without a regular diet of Scripture, we are building our lives on a very shaky foundation that will eventually crumble.

Today, on what foundation are you building your life?

HOW FIRM A FOUNDATION

1)How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!
What more can He say than to you He hath said,
You, who unto Jesus for refuge have fled?

2)In every condition, in sickness, in health;
In poverty’s vale, or abounding in wealth;
At home and abroad, on the land, on the sea,
As thy days may demand, shall thy strength ever be.

3)Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
For I am thy God and will still give thee aid;
I’ll strengthen and help thee, and cause thee to stand
Upheld by My righteous, omnipotent hand.

4)When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
The rivers of woe shall not thee overflow;
For I will be with thee, thy troubles to bless,
And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.

5)When through fiery trials thy pathways shall lie,
My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply;
The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.

6)Even down to old age all My people shall prove
My sovereign, eternal, unchangeable love;
And when hoary hairs shall their temples adorn,
Like lambs they shall still in My bosom be borne.

7)The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to its foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no never, no never forsake.

(John Rippon’s Selection of Hymns – 1787)
