God’s Mercies
“Morning by morning new mercies I see” ~ Thomas O. Chisholm
Last evening, I went to bed reflecting on the mercies of God and thanking Him that His mercies are new every morning. God is not just a God of second chances…or should I say opportunities. I think that is a better word.
This morning, the Lord allowed me to read the following:
“But after they had rest, they did evil again before thee: therefore leftest thou them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried unto thee, thou heardest them from heaven; and many times didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies;” Nehemiah 9:28
The last phrase – “many times didst thou deliver them according to thy mercies” – is what stood out to me. Oh my, how very thankful for the MANY times the Lord has delivered me from a mess I have caused. If we were all honest, we would have to admit that many of the troubles we find ourselves in are actually the consequences of our own doing. We have no right to complain to God but rather cry out for mercy. A few verses later, I was reminded of this truth:
“Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly:” Nehemiah 9:33
God is a just God. He always ALWAYS does right. No, not all trials that come our way are His chastening hand upon us…but when they are, the best thing for us to do is own up to it and say,
“Lord, You are just in all that is brought upon me. You have done right. I have done wrong.”
When we are finally able to say that from a repentant heart, we are now in the right position to ask for mercy…once again.
This morning, aren’t you thankful for the MANY times God has shown His mercy to you?
“Hear me, O LORD; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies.” Psalm 69:16
