Coming To God’s Table
Reading in 1 Peter this morning reminded me of my GRANDchildren. There have been times that they have brought their toys to the supper table. When this happens, I have to tell them “no toys while you’re eating”.
First Peter tells us some things we are to “lay aside” before coming to the table of God’s Word.
“Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:” 1 Peter 2:1-2 KJV
- Malice – “settled overgrown anger”
- Guile – “deceit in words, flattery, falsehood”
- Hypocrisies – “counterfeit religion, counterfeit friendship, etc”
- Envies – “grieving at the good of another”
- Evil speakings – “speaking against, defaming, backbiting”
Yes, we may continue reading our Bibles each morning, but if we are refusing to deal with these heart issues of malice, guile, hypocrisies, envies and evil speakings, our spiritual growth will be greatly hindered.
Were there some things we should have laid aside this morning before we picked up our Bibles? As we confess these sins, let’s be sure we don’t run back to them as a child runs back to his toys after eating. By God’s grace, let’s lay them aside and leave them.
